Tocci’s Greatest Hits: Vol. II; Opening Reception

Date/Time: 8/17/2018 (5pm - 8pm)

Glens Falls native Jeff Tocci is a contemporary artist whose timeless vision resides in the past as much as the present. His brand of social realism—sometimes challenging, always real—crosses many epochs and touches on many themes through the utilization of various forms of artistic expression including painting, drawing, etching, lithographs, and sculpture. Dividing his time
between New York City and Oaxaca, Mexico, Tocci’s work is influenced by both cultures while remaining inherently unique in every way. A student of Robert Cenedella at The Art Students
League of New York, a 143-year-old institution and creative factory of artistic energy, Tocci remains indebted to the great satirist as well as to Cenedella’s own mentor, the German expressionist George Grosz. And in accordance with this lineage, Tocci continues to develop his work further by wedding contemporary themes with the traditional techniques. Stone lithography, oil painting, ink drawing as well as his admiration for Mexican folk-art provides further evidence that Tocci is an artist at home in more than one culture, more than one artistic medium, and more than one period of time.

This Pop-up exhibition is Tocci’s first show in his hometown and brings together over 40 excerpts from his artistic journey. Some of the works were first displayed in his NYC show Mexicana: Lost & Found, others found their way into his joint show in Oaxaca City with Cenedella called Bastardos Americanos. Still others, such as a recent stone lithograph produced at the legendary Atelier Clot in Paris, France, are being exhibited for the first time. Of particular interest is Tocci’s public debut of his series of Vanitas, a unique assemblage of 3-dimensional scenes combining found objects of Mexican folk-art with his original etchings acting as the backdrop.
Art lovers in the Southern Adirondack region are in for a treat; Tocci’s Greatest Hits, Vol. II brings the work of a multi-dimensional world-class artist home where it belongs for the first
time.

Local Logging Live!

Date/Time: 8/24/2018

Local Logging Live! event to celebrate loggers

Tannery Pond Center (TPC) in North Creek will present a very special event called “Local Logging Live! Along the Hudson”. The event planned for August 24th and 25th, 2018 will celebrate the logging industry in our local communities, both past and present, with activities taking place at both the Tannery Pond Community Center and Riverfront Park in North Creek.

Many families have been in the logging trade for generations and TPC wants to showcase the cultural aspects of this industry and the major role played by the Hudson River. Planned are a variety of activities including musical concerts, historical displays and Gallery exhibit, multi-media lecture, mini woodsmen field day demonstrations, workshops on musical instruments of logging camps, buff mittens, blacksmithing and more. All daytime events are free.

The two-day event will kick off with history, storytelling and a reception in the Widlund Gallery on Friday, followed by the Dave Ruch and Canal Street String Band performing in the auditorium.

On Saturday there will be a Celebration of Logging at Riverfront Park. Events at the park will include Eric Bright and The Log Jammers playing music and displaying the guitars he builds from reclaimed logs from Schroon Lake and the Hudson River. Food and beverages will be available; provided by Johnsburg’s Junior Outdoor Club and beer generously donated by Adirondack Brewery. There will also be a raffle with fantastic prizes including a chainsaw, a carved wooden bear donated by Sculptures by Frank and much more. Attendees will enjoy demonstrations, displays and hands-on workshops from Adirondack Folk School and Adirondack Experience, as well as Lumberjack games designed for the whole family and traditional music workshops with Dave Ruch of Canal Street String Band.

TPC will welcome acclaimed comedian Rusty DeWees as “The Logger” on Saturday evening at Tannery Pond Community Center. This will be a hilarious combination of stand-up comedy and theater, along with lively country music. The Logger has been described as “Blue Collar Comedy” meets “Prairie Home Companion” and is rated SC for “some cussin’.”

Tannery Pond Center invites all local loggers to be part of the “Local Logging Live! Along the Hudson” celebration. Loggers and other groups interested in joining the celebration in any way are encouraged to call Daphne Taylor, Tannery Pond Center Managing Director at 518-251-2505 ext. 128.
