Sheldon Binns and William Shank started a community orchestra in 1973,
named the Adirondack Concert Orchestra, later changed to Adirondack
Philharmonic. At that time Adirondack Community College music
students could receive academic credit for participating. In
1982, the organization took the name, Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra,
which is now a professional orchestra with 54 performing members.
Currently, the Symphony is conducted by Charles Peltz who was hired in 2000
as Music Director after a nation-wide search. Mr. Peltz's predecessor was Hugh Allen Wilson who
conducted from 1984-2000. Michael Stone, Carl Hackett, and
Dennis Searles have each served as conductors in the past.
Robert Rosoff serves as the Executive Director, overseeing the daily
administration, and Sally Lemery serves as Administrative Assistant.
The mission of the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra is to provide a
musical experience that is professional, educational, and entertaining
through live performance and community outreach. To this end,
under Music Director, Charles Peltz, and Executive Director, Robert
Rosoff, the performance schedule has
already grown from six. performances in 2000-01 to ten in
2001-02. The 2001-02 season will include four subscription
concerts, pop performances, a children's concert, and summer concerts.
