The SOUTHERN ADIRONDACK AUDUBON SOCIETY (SAAS) is a local chapter
of the National Audubon Society, whose primary goal is to protect
the environment by preserving natural habitats and promoting
environmental education. SAAS offers monthly meetings at the
Moreau Community Center in South Glens Falls. We feature speakers,
slide and/or powerpoint programs. In
addition, SAAS conducts bird watching and botany field trips,
publishes a newsletter The Fledgling, participates in the National
Christmas Bird Count and Project Feeder Watch and conducts the
annual Birdathon in May.
Wednesday May 16 through Sunday May 20, has been designated
as Birdathon 2007! Birdathon is one of the more important and most
interesting activities of SAAS. During this period of peak migration we
try to cover all the territory in our Chapter to seek out birds coming
to nest or passing through on their way north. Pick a day and time
convenient to you and enjoy some time in the field in search of birds. The event is open to all, no matter what level of birding you do.
Remember, in this survey we are counting species, not numbers of
individual birds. Send your lists to Joan Robertson, PO Box 51, Cleverdale,
NY 12820.
Other citizen based science projects that we are
involved with include the Christmas Bird count, a dawn to dusk event
where we identify, count and record all the birds that we see, and the
Ft. Edward Grassland Important Bird Area survey. This is an important
raptor wintering area and has a large concentration of the endangered Short-eared Owl.
The SAAS Board of Directors, Officers and Committee Chairs will
meet on the following dates in the LARAC building, 7 Lapham Place
on Glens Falls City Park: April 22, 2-4 pm; May 20, 5-7 pm; and
June 24, 2-4 pm. Members are welcome and encouraged to
attend. Please come and offer your comments on how we can
further develop our chapter. We’d like to hear your
suggestions for public programs, how we can grow our chapter, and
offer more conservation educational programs to the residents of our
area. Please send your suggestions to Don Polunci at
nanandon@adelphia.net or call 793-1531.
New members are always welcome. Anyone interested in becoming
a member of the SAAS should contact Claire at 793-9088.
Membership is $10, which includes a copy of their newsletter, The
Fledgling. |
