The Charles R. Wood Theater opened in June 2004 with much fanfare
and a debt of over $700,000. Today the mortgage is paid off,
the facility is holding 300 days of activity and over 120 actual
events. Many nights are spent at the Wood in rehearsal and
set up for these events. Throughout the year over 25,000
people come through the door for active participation in a Wood
Theater activity.
The Charles R. Wood Theater subsidizes all non-profits that perform
in the theater, which is the majority of renters. Never
designed to make its total operating revenue on rentals alone, the
Wood Theater has been blessed with a community that understands its
worth and supports it.
The next step in the Wood Theater’s life is to renovate the
backstage dressing rooms and install adequate toilet facilities for
both actors and handicapped performers. This is a must to
begin renting the facility to union and professional acts.
This project will finish the Capital Campaigns that were called Act
I and ACT 2. The goal was to raise $500,000, and to date the Wood
Theater has raised 465,000 of this goal.
The sustainability of the Wood Theater will come with
annual membership drives and fund raisers. The community was
supportive and the Wood Theater's first Mother’s Day Weekend event
with Tony DeSare raised over $30,000 in badly needed operating
expenses.
The Theater has been able to install lobby carpeting,
refurbish the Paramount Theater Box Office, upgrade its regular box
office, refurbish lights and obtain new equipment and safety
features because of generous donations from the Community.
The Wood Theater is a proven boon to the business community
of downtown, "when it’s busy so is the downtown". Almost 20
businesses have signed on to give Wood Theater Members special
deals and offers when presenting their Wood Theater membership
card.
The purpose of the Wood Theater is to promote cultural and
artistic endeavors, thereby fostering the economic development of,
and improving the quality of life within the greater Glens Falls
area. In just a few short years this goal is quickly becoming
reality. |
