Warren County Historical Society was chartered in
1997 by the NYS Education Department as a non-profit educational
organization, governed by a 25 member Board of Trustees which meets
bimonthly. The Society's mission is to promote the history of
Warren County, New York and its environs by supporting research and
preservation efforts and encouraging public participation.
Its membership now totals nearly 125, and operations of the Society
are carried out largely by volunteers under the supervision of an
Executive Director. The society has a 501-c-3 tax exempt
status and a NYS sales tax exemption.
A research library holds some 450 volumes of Warren
County and related texts plus files on persons, places and topics
related to the county, and a small genealogical collection.
Research has been undertaken on the Underground Railroad, the Great
Depression, Johnson’s Military Road, and notable people of the
county with a special emphasis on women. The Society houses
the Old Quaker Burying Ground archeological collection, the Barker
and Henry architectural collection, and three disbanded women’s
collections from the Women’s Auxiliary of World War I, Everywoman’s
Council, and the Greater Glens Falls League of Women Voters in
addition to printed and manuscript materials, maps, photographs,
film, audio and videotapes, oral histories, paintings, and
artifacts.
Bimonthly historical programs are offered around the
county to members and the public at no charge. A history camp for
children was launched in 2005. The Society will publish
selected historical manuscripts which address the county’s rich
history. Currently the society has a special exhibit at its
headquarters at 71 Lawrence Street, Glens Falls (in the Old Troy
Shirt Factory) commemorating the 250th anniversary of the French
and Indian War featuring artifacts found in the area from that
period. The facility is open Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m.
