May 2006 Organization of the Month

Each month LARAC highlights an Organization from the Adirondack Region
that is tied to the arts and culture of the region.

National Museum of Dance &
Hall of Fame

Saratoga Springs, NY

The National Museum of Dance is located in the beautifully restored Washington Bath House--a spacious 1918 Arts & Crafts National Historic Landmark in Saratoga Spa State Park and is the only museum in the nation dedicated to American professional dance.  The museum houses photographs, videos, artifacts, costumes and archives comprising a contemporary and retrospective examination of seminal contributions to dance.

The Hall of Fame, the museum’s only permanent collection, honors more than 30 dancers, choreographers, teachers, designers, critics and dance patrons.  In 2006, the museum will introduce five new exhibits:

Dance of the Iroquois--This is an interactive and educational display of the important social traditions of the Native Iroquois people. Geared toward an audience of all ages, this exhibit is fun for children and intellectually stimulating for adults.  While focusing on the social dances of the Iroquois, the exhibit hopes to illustrate an import aspect of the rich Native American culture.

Dance Across New York--This exhibit features dance organizations from across the state of New York, highlighting multiple styles of dance and teaching methods.  Photos of the organization’s dancers, a brief history of the organization and its director, as well as a synopsis of their involvement with their community to enrich them in the art of dance complete this exhibit.

Young Dancer--For nearly two years Mark Sadan has photographed a young ballerina, capturing the inner world of the young dancer.  This exhibit displays a graceful, radiant and talented young woman at an important and exciting period in her life.

Lake George Showboat--The onset of the Great Depression and the advent of the automobile had rendered the large Lake George steamboats relatively obsolete.  From 1933-1938 the idea was conceived to transform the Horicon II into a Showboat.  Big Bands and entertainers from New York City performed aboard to help the struggling Lake George Steamboat Company alive.  This exhibit features photos, costumes, masks, and a biography of local Lake George Showboat performer, Edith Tulloch de Polac.

Photo Gallery--The National Museum of Dance has transformed its beautiful foyer into a photo gallery. The gallery will display the work of local dance photographers, beginning with Lawrence White.
