The Adirondack Museum is a regional history museum that strives to
engage, inspire, and enlighten the public about the
interrelationships between people and nature in the Adirondack
region. The museum is located on Route 30 in Blue Mountain Lake and
is open daily (10 am to 5 pm) from May 26, 2006 to October 15, 2006
plus all weekends in October. Twenty-two indoor and outdoor exhibit
areas on 32 beautifully landscaped acres tell the story of people
who have inhabited and visited this land of forests, lakes, and
mountains since the early 1800s.
Exhibits range from an entire
building devoted to transportation in the Adirondacks (with a
private railroad car, Model T Ford, and a stagecoach) to Sunset
Cottage, a one-room building covered entirely with split-wood
decorative patterns, the epitome of Adirondack Rustic architecture. One of the finest collections of freshwater boats in America, a
complete blacksmith shop, a logging display, works of fine art, a Photobelt with historic photographs, a rustic cottage with rustic
furniture, and an extensive library all document how people lived,
traveled, worked and played in the Adirondacks.
Family interactive
activities are located throughout the museum. Children can climb
aboard the shortest standard-gauge railroad in the country, build a
toy boat, or take a ride in the boat pond. Demonstrations and
special programs are also offered on a regular basis. Services
include the Lake View Café and Museum Store. |
