The Lake George Community Band was established in
May of 2003 and numbers over 80 members. The LGCB is the
result of the efforts of two members – Robert Rockwell and John
Herzog, whose initial intent was to form a marching band to
represent the Lake George Community in various events throughout
the year. While searching for a conductor and rehearsal
space, the idea evolved into forming a community band with a
marching division, and with this all the pieces fell into place.
In May of 2003, Greg Mason conducted LGCB’s first rehearsal
followed by the band’s first public concert in August, lakeside at
Shepard Park. In September 2003, the marching unit
participated in the centennial celebration of the Village of Lake
George. In 2004, the band marched in the Hudson Valley
Volunteer Fireman’s Convention Parade in Lake Placid, NY,
representing the Lake George Volunteer Fire Department as well as
the Lake George Elvis Festival “Tribute Artist and Classic Car
Parade.”
LGCB's home venue is the Shepard Park Amphitheatre
on beautiful Lake George, Queen of the American Lakes.
Playing for civic and recreational functions, such as the Summer
Concert Series by the Lake, has exposed the band to a vast
audience, including thousands of vacationers each year. The
LGCB features concert band music reminiscent of turn-of-the-century
concerts in the park. The LGCB’s mission is to provide the
community with musical programs throughout the summer and holiday
seasons, preserving the tradition of performing American concert
and marching band music. It also provides local
musicians an opportunity to play their instruments in a setting of
camaraderie and community.
This July 23, the LGCB will host its first Community
Band Festival in Lake George, featuring 9 bands. Each band
will perform its own program and the highlight of the event will be
a combined band performance featuring as many participants from
each band as possible at 3 pm. Participating bands represent
the communities of Hartford, Syracuse, Rochester, and Rotterdam,
NY; St. Johnsbury, VT; Middletown, CT; Pittsfield, MA; and
Westwood, NJ. The LGCB anticipates this will become an annual
event. For more information on the band and band festival, visit
