June 2004 Organization of the Month |
|
Each month LARAC highlights an Organization from
the Adirondack Region that is tied to the arts and culture of the
region. |
| |
Charles R. Wood Theater
Glens Falls, NY |
|
On June 12, the Charles R. Wood Theater will
open thanks to a community-wide effort to convert the former
Woolworths building into a permanent performing arts facility.
Since its inception in 1999, the Woolworth Theater Project has
brought together the best strengths, hopes, and possibilities:
a business community with strong local roots and an understanding
that we must do the heavy lifting for economic development
ourselves, an arts community with a long history of involving all
aspects of our community and striving for excellence, and a
philanthropic tradition that now as much as ever makes this a place
rich with wonderful opportunities.

The Woolworth Theater Project (now the Charles R.
Wood Theater) has been designed with the specific mission of
creating as much activity by as wide a spectrum of performing
groups as possible. Adirondack Theatre Festival, Glens Falls
Community Theater, and Adirondack Children's Troupe will be calling
the Charles R. Wood Theater home. Its 300 seats were determined to be the
optimal number to generate performance nights and its stage
facilities suited to many of the region's performing entities.
The spacious rehearsal area and proposed basement
rehearsal/performance space will add to the activity level.
The Design Team of Glens Falls' Joy McCoola & Zilch,
P.C. as architects and New York City's Minds Eye Consultants as
theater consultants has created a space which will be functional,
flexible, and comfortable. Besides the theater, the building will
also contain retail, office and rehearsal space, all consistent
with the economic development portion of the Project's goals.
