"Arm Chair", Barry Gregson |
Shown is LARAChairfest, an exhibition of approximately
30 artist created chairs, paintings of chairs, photographs and prints of
chairs, miniature and life-sized chairs. The juror, Darren Miller,
is the gallery director at the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts in
Blue Mountain Lake, NY. Presented in conjunction with LARAChairfest is an
exhibit of rustic chairs by nationally known rustic furniture maker Barry
Gregson. Gregson and his wife Darlene own Adirondack Rustic Gallery
on Main Street, Schroon Lake. The Gallery represents the work of fifty
rustic furniture makers. “I think it’s America’s longest running rustic
furniture gallery,” says Gregson, of his gallery that was begun in 1984.
Gregson has been making rustic furniture since 1981, but “everything since
childhood has led me to do what I do,” he says. Borrowing his
father’s tools, he was fashioning his own toys at age seven. When
making his rustic furniture he uses mostly antique tools—hatchet, shaving
horse, draw knife—and makes his own pegs using techniques from the
eighteen and nineteen centuries. Gregson’s first chair, as well as
two chairs he made for his daughter, and chairs made by his son Matthew
and his daughter Skye, will also be part of LARAC’s exhibition. |

photographer Carl Heilman. Heilman, who has been photographing the
Adirondacks since 1975, has had his work published regionally and
nationally in books, magazines, calendars, travel guides, and advertising,
and has had numerous exhibitions in the upstate area. Approximately
20 images are shown, depicting the area in spring, summer and fall modes. |

"Winter Cat-tails", Shelley Valachovic |
Rounding out LARAC’s Spring offering is work by
artists Shelley Valachovic and Ken Wheeler. Valachovic, of Lake Luzerne, presents watercolor
botanicals reflecting species found in the region, as well as handmade
hemlock and pine needle baskets. She earned a BS in Art Education and has
exhibited locally, is represented nationally, and her work is included in
many corporate and private collections. |

"The Barns at Santanoni", Ken Wheeler |
Watercolorist Ken Wheeler of
Queensbury presents four new paintings in a series based on Great Camp Santanoni. He has been working in watercolor since 1991 and is the
