Antique Banks
from the collection of
Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company
Three dozen antique mechanical and static banks from the Glens
Falls National Bank and Trust Company were on exhibit in late fall 2001 at the Lapham Gallery.
The first mechanical coin bank was invented in 1869, and
this exhibition presents banks from 1877 to the turn of the Twentieth
Century. Favorites from the collection include Teddy and the Bear, where
President "Teddy" Roosevelt shoots a coin into a tree trunk, causing
the head of a grizzly bear to emerge from the top of the tree, and the Leap Frog
Bank, where one boy leaps over another to push a lever on a tree trunk,
releasing a coin into the bank.
