The Adirondacks are a beautiful place to live! And Carl Heilman is one
of the Adirondack's premier photographers that document this space.
Carl’s ties with the Adirondacks go back to his childhood when his
family vacationed here, and in 1973 he moved to the family home in Brant
Lake. Photography has been his love for over 27 years, and he states,
“Everything I’ve done to earn a living has been to feed my photography
habit.” Among other things, he’s worked construction, made crampon
straps for climbers, and
snowshoes.
While he does do some close up photography, cityscapes, wildlife, and
people, he states, “Whenever I go out, I always look for the wide view
and then focus down if necessary.” He seeks ways to work the view with
the changes in the light and the effects of the weather and the times of
day. His goal is to create photographs that impart the feeling of the
moment as he experienced it.
He started with a Minolta 101 and in the 1980s moved to professional
equipment, stating, “Quality equipment is critical to producing
professional results”. All of his original work is done on film,
which is then scanned and worked digitally to reproduce in prints as
much of the detail in the original transparency as possible. His
current emphasis is on panoramic photography, using a motorized camera
that weighs about 11 pounds. Normally he travels with about 35 pounds of
equipment, which includes includes the Roundshot panoramic camera, a
Nikon SLR body, sturdy tripod, lenses, filters, and film.
Carl is busy with many facets of photography: photography classes,
digital darkroom workshops, photography exhibitions, slide
presentations, and an online newsletter. His photography workshops and
digital darkroom workshops draw people from all over the region and are
offered throughout the year. On May 17 and 18 LARAC is cosponsoring two
of his landscape workshops. Participants will meet for a day in the Lake
George region for a low impact hike to area waterways, valleys, and
trails where they will have the opportunity to photograph the views of
choice. Visit his web site to register. On August 7, Carl will be
presenting a slide show at Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek. In addition to Carl’s Adirondack slide presentation, Dan Berggren, Dan
Duggan, and Peggy Lynn will perform live. On August 13, another slide
show will be presented at Racquette Lake sans performers. You can
also see his photographs on exhibit at LARAC's Lapham Gallery from May 9
through June 27. Visit
his web site to get updates
on his latest offerings and to sign up for his
e-newsletter.
In 1999 after seven months of work and shooting
about 100 rolls of film, Carl published his first book, Adirondacks: Views of American
Wilderness, which sold out in hardcover but is still available in
softcover. He’s now looking into publishing another. His
photographs and book make beautiful gifts and provide wonderful accents
to an Adirondack home. He has varied sizes of prints of the Lake
George and Adirondack region at
