Award-winning mystery writer and Queensbury resident Anne
White didn’t plunge into it book writing the way some novelists do.
White’s story is a bit of a Chapter Three Scenario--one that began after
years of raising six children and a career as a high school librarian.
It was while working at Queensbury High School that she began writing in
earnest--on the topic of career directions for young people. “It was
fascinating,” White recalled. “I had no idea there was so much
material on careers.” Soon, the librarian found herself writing
articles on a regular basis for three different publications.
Eventually, she developed a career education program for the students,
which helped them align with career choices they were suited for.
As much as she enjoyed the career writing, it was after
retirement that White realized she was finally free to pursue her
long-dormant desire of writing mysteries. White credits workshops
offered by The Lake George Arts Project for providing a place to learn
the technique and for the encouragement she received from teachers such
as Doug Glover and Oscar Hijuelos. “I really started to explore
the idea that I could learn to write a mystery,” said White. “Matt
Witten from Saratoga taught a workshop in mystery writing which was
perfect for what I wanted. Plus he was so incredibly encouraging
to me. Without that, I wouldn’t have had the nerve to finish it
and send it in.”

White’s first mystery, AN AFFINITY FOR MURDER was published in
2001 to rave reviews. Set in Lake George, the mystery
revolves around two dead art experts and a secret cache of
paintings, which may have been the work Georgia O’Keefe.
It was Witten (who has since moved to Los Angeles and is now
assistant producer and a writer for House) who
suggested that White enter AN AFFINITY FOR MURDER in Oak Tree
Press Dark Oak Contest, which she ended up winning in 2002.
“The award gave me a lot of push in the mystery world,” she
recalled. AN AFFINITY FOR MURDER also was nominated in
2002 for Best First Mystery from Malice Domestic, a national
mystery organization. And it pushed her to continue her Lake George
mystery series. |

Her second book, BENEATH THE SURFACE, revolves around the
female mayor of the fictitious Emerald Point, her grisly
discovery while out jogging one morning, and a series of
unexpected events that appear to be connected. “After
brainstorming with an agent, I realized there are an awful lot
of mysteries where the main character is a writer,” explained
White. “So I decided to make her a mayor, and I like the
idea of women in power.” |

White’s third mystery titled Best Laid Plans, A Lake George
Mystery is finished and
ready for publication by Hilliard and Harris. Having
found a niche in the genre she’s always loved is a dream come
true, but it’s the process she enjoys more than anything.
“Mystery writing is a very disciplined form of writing,” said
White. “There’s a certain amount of pacing in terms of
how characters are introduced. And playing fair with
readers in terms of dropping hints … but you can’t drop too
many.” White and her books will be at The Chronicle Book
Fair this October. Both books are available at LARAC's
Carriage House Gift Shop where area books are sold, or through
