Roger Fox is a master woodcarver and craftsman that
learned his trade by his wits and love for woodwork. His life
accomplishments in woodwork began at the age of thirteen and over the
years have come to include cabinetmaking, antique restoration, creating
wooden toys, and custom pieces.
A most remarkable line of Roger’s creations includes his
Grecian banks. The hefty weight and light grain of the bank boxes
distinguishes the wood as solid oak. The banks fashion a Grecian-style
lock box front of bronze; antique pieces retired from the U.S. post
office system, some as old as 200 years. Roger restores the old
post office lock boxes and reconfigures their combination system to
mechanical accuracy. There is nothing half-hearted or inferior
about Roger’s work. He notes that there are several hundred types
of wood that he may use in his creations.
As an artist Roger remains faithful to “old-fashioned
methods” of woodwork to sustain the authenticity of his craft.
Particleboard and other modern day production line items fail to corrupt
the wholesomeness of his trade. Roger’s business located in
Fultonville, New York is called Mohawk Enterprises and it is there that
he has taken on some of his most challenging cases, one of which
includes restoring a rolltop desk that had partially disintegrated into
“90 million pieces.”
Like many artists, Roger’s craft shop is a studio for
creation and resurrection; a place for personal stress relief and
therapy that restores his artistic center as he meditates over the
intricacies of his work. What emerges is the confluence of human
intellect, historical significance and natural beauty. Roger’s Grecian
banks will be for sale at LARAC’s Holiday Gift Shop November 20-January
5.
