Kate E. Austin is an artist who likes to push buttons. Her subject
matter is personal and emotional, and her paintings often have stories
behind them, embodying the statement that “real art won't match your
sofa”. She feels as if she has a story to tell, and her work is
reflective, like a journal. She doesn't fit into one category of media;
she collages with found objects and personal mementos, paints with
watercolor and acrylic on gesso or yupo, and even has been known to
paint using brushes made from her own hair. She has been featured in the
Post Star's “go” section and is a member of LARAC, NCAC, the Upper
Hudson Valley Watercolor Society, and the Killington Arts Guild. Visit her website

"I paint using acrylics and canvas and recently began working with clay,
constructing utilitarian pieces that can be used in daily life. In
keeping with the utilitarian theme, I'm eager to begin making floor
cloths, hand painted floor covering made of heavy canvas. Gauguin and
Van Gogh, the people that I love and the different places I have visited
influence me. From the simplicity of a small, brightly painted
town in Guatemala, to the ornamental wrought iron found in New Orleans,
I have always enjoyed regional architecture. I have painted and
sketched in various places including New Orleans, Montreal and Atalaya,
a Spanish castle in Huntington Beach, South Carolina; however, the ocean
at Myrtle Beach and Eighth Lake Island in the Adirondacks are where I am
most at home." |

My works are based on the idea that much of what we do in our lives
depends on ordinary objects to be successful. I also feel that
these commonplace objects are, frequently, taken for granted. I
see it as my job to illuminate these objects, perhaps to remind us how
amazing these items were when they were first introduced. To
suggest their potential for improving (with proper use and care) or
destroying (through abuse, excess or lack) our quality of life.
By extracting these objects from everyday life and placing them on a
pedestal or within a frame, I hope that others might also see these old
things in a new light. They might reappreciate these things, as I
have done, and think about how their lives relate to these objects or
events. I do not classify my work as Still Life. Rather, I
think my objects show what we are, what we've become, and how we have
defined ourselves over time, by using these objects. It is also
my feeling that much of what I show hasn't changed, in intent, since
the objects themselves were introduced to us. |

My process of collage painting often suggests the fragmented moments of
everyday life, the evanescence of time and the mystery of existence.
By layering several paintings against a landscape, I seek to create a
unique pictorial narrative depicting simultaneous realities within a
theme. |

Anne's etchings are done in a realistic style, responding to her home
in the rural Adirondacks. Some of her subjects have been feathers,
ravens, leaves and trees. A trip to Italy resulted in a focus on masks
while the contrasting forms of Santa Fe are currently being explored. Printmaking affords her the luxury of printing from one plate in a
variety of ways, changing colors, combining plates in one print and
sometimes collaging in colored papers. (chine colle) |

"As an artist, I have always found inspiration in close observation of
the natural world, and in the ever-changing play of light and shadow
over organic forms. My recent paintings combine rounded rocks
(collected in my travels), pears, wild mushrooms, seeds, and eggs.
Through my art, I seek to convey a sense of visual poetry." For
twenty years, Kate has painted, exhibited, and taught art, with
watercolors as her specialty. She ran a small arts school in

Betty O'Brien considers herself
a "painterly realist", part of the romantic tradition of
landscape painters who create a sense of place as a metaphor for the
human spirit. Attempting to make opposites connect, she seeks
out contrasting elements, those inherent in the subject as well as
those existing in the creative process. Although her compositions
are carefully planned, media manipulation and brushwork push the
reality of her water media works well beyond the merely descriptive.
Betty also teaches watercolor classes at her WaterMedia Academy. Connect

"Since my time as an artist-in-residence at the Claude Monet Foundation
in Giverny, France, I feel as though I have been on the other end of
Monet’s see-saw. While he pressed his work from strict observation
into abstraction with his late lily paintings, I am pushing mine from
abstraction back into representation. In my most recent work, I
like to sit on the edge between the two possibilities. I am
happiest when I can make a very abstract composition and yet imbue it
with all sorts of qualities that are only possible in a representational
context, such as light reflections, transparencies, translucencies,
glitter, sparkle and shimmer. How light affects natural surfaces,
such as flowers, insects and water; and artificial surfaces, such as
patent leather, foil, Mylar, transparent ribbons, and glass, become part
of my visual arsenal. For a while the more elusive and impossible the
image was to paint, the more it interested me. A painting succeeds
for me when it seems as though the light is emanating from inside the
canvas." |

Jim Parker states, "I've always been creative and dabbled in visual
arts. A life threatening medical diagnosis has taught me that there is
only this moment. Painting whether it be in oil or watercolor keeps me
in the moment. I believe you can see my passion for life in the images.
I paint what I know--the Adirondacks, Saratoga, and the ocean." |

Sara Pearsall maintains two distinct artistic
pursuits through printing inks and polymer & silver clays. As a
screenprinter, her prints are vibrant images of the Adirondack
wilderness that are interpreted using transparent screenprinting inks
and then altered with photographic computer programs. Additionally
her jewelry designs combine the natural beauty of the Adirondacks with
the versatility of polymer and precious metal clays. Many of the
colors, textures, designs and inspiring images link the prints and
jewelry pieces together for a beautiful cross of mediums. |

Having lived in Buffalo, NYC, and Italy, I've finally found my space in
the world in charming Greenwich NY. Life is slower, simpler and
richer. The farm animals that dot the luscious landscapes inspire
me to no end. I love showcasing the nobleness of each creature and
the farmlands that rival any I've seen in Tuscany. My hope is to
inspire an appreciation of the often unnoticed physical complexity in
animals and the farms that are the jewels of this region. |

Karen Plude is a self-taught acrylic painter. Several years ago,
though, she became interested in photography. Though she liked
looking at the things she saw in her viewfinder – the Eiffel Tower, the
Swiss Alps, the Grand Canyon – she especially liked looking at people
and often wondered how those photos would look if they were paintings
instead. The more she looked through the lens, the more those
paintings popped into her head. Karen says of her work, “The people in
my paintings tell me stories about themselves. When I paint them, their
thoughts seem to come to me through the canvas, as if I can read their
minds. Even in my paintings where people are nowhere to be found,
I can still sense their presence.” Karen grew up in South Glens
Falls but has lived most recently in New York City and San Francisco. She currently has her studio in Peekskill where she lives with her writer
husband Jeff. Karen is available for commissions. |

John Randall
Commissioned Portraits, Landscapes, Wildlife. "I've always wanted
to visually create, as far back as can remember, to tell a story, to
express a feeling, a sense of place. To me, nothing is more
beautiful, fascinating ,and more challenging than the light interacting
with the environment. Sunlight striking the mountainside, the way
a candle will flicker and throw shadows, the soft light on my love's
face--that is what I try to convey through my art."
Elaine Randall
Fiber Artist
"I enjoy the solitary confinement inside my head when knitting and am
taken with natural fibers, especially wool and alpaca. My process is not
particularly one of planning. The texture and color of each yarn
generates the creation, my fingers just there to pull it together." |

Ann Woodward's mixed media paintings on paper combine still lifes and
landscapes in watercolor, egg tempera and pencil with paper collage and
gold leaf. She states, "I am influenced by 19th century
English and American botanical studies, the small works of Manet,
Matisse, and early Spanish still-life painters. Japanese art,
Chinese landscape painting and Persian miniatures are also a source of
inspiration to me as is the color and texture of paper itself. I
juxtapose the realistic with the abstract to create what I can best
describe as visual poems." Ann has exhibited in solo shows in NYC,
