Visual Arts
Lito Allegra Abrams
Lake George, NY  12845 (518)668-5376
Sarasota, FL  34235  (941)377-6424
litoabrams@earthlink.net

Fascinated by the "topography" of living creatures, Lito paints people and animals in acrylic and watercolor.  With an eclectic and impassioned eye for the visual, she focuses on the subject, pushes what can be done with color, moves into questions of what is real in terms of figure/ground, and references an art history background for its rich tapestry of ideas.  Works usually have a subtle play of humor, contrast between the formal and information, and an attempt to influence the viewer, whether it's a feeling of tension or a very direct pull into the work.

Work by Kate E. Austin
Kate E. Austin is an artist who likes to push buttons.  Her subject matter is personal and emotional, and her paintings often have stories behind them, embodying the statement that “real art won't match your sofa”.  She feels as if she has a story to tell, and her work is reflective, like a journal.  She doesn't fit into one category of media; she collages with found objects and personal mementos, paints with watercolor and acrylic on gesso or yupo, and even has been known to paint using brushes made from her own hair.  She has been featured in the Post Star's “go” section and is a member of LARAC, NCAC, the Upper Hudson Valley Watercolor Society, and the Killington Arts Guild.  Visit her website for more information.

My painting style is realistic, in a general sense. There will be areas of indistinct representation in each painting that could suggest that I am not a slave to detail. Truth be told, however, I am a slave to detail. I feel that the images I represent will have meaning to someone who has much more experience with the subject than I and I want them to be satisfied that the image is accurate - then move on to the image is interesting. The thumbnail represented here is an image that was entered in a contest and was selected (with 9 others) from over 2,000 entries, to be published in the March 2010 issue of The Artist’s Magazine.

Etching by Anne Gregson, "Little Big Dog by the Ditch"
Anne's etchings are done in a realistic style, responding to her home in the rural Adirondacks.  Some of her subjects have been feathers, ravens, leaves and trees.  A trip to Italy resulted in a focus on masks while the contrasting forms of Santa Fe are currently being explored.  Printmaking affords her the luxury of printing from one plate in a variety of ways, changing colors, combining plates in one print and sometimes collaging in colored papers. "Loved, Lumps and All", watercolor by K. Hartley
"As an artist, I have always found inspiration in close observation of the natural world, and in the ever-changing play of light and shadow over organic forms.  My recent paintings combine rounded rocks (collected in my travels), pears, wild mushrooms, seeds, and eggs.  Through my art, I seek to convey a sense of visual poetry."  For twenty years, Kate has painted, exhibited, and taught art, with watercolors as her specialty.  She ran a small arts school in Burlington, VT before moving to North Creek and is looking forward to teaching at Tannery Pond Community Center.

Contorted Continuance by Jenny Hutchinson
Jenny Hutchinson considers herself somewhat of an anomaly.  Her body of work features single, multiple, or conjoined forms that explore figuration in both abstract and representational modes.  Each figure is a continuous stream of consciousness that transforms and develops as a result of artistic medium, observation, and memory.  She likes to think of her use of drawing and painting materials as relative to alchemy.  The materials serve as tools to help direct and translate the simultaneous narrative to provide a more sincere sense of reality and physical representation of a human body.

Watercolor by Betty O'Brien
Betty O'Brien considers herself a "painterly realist", part of the romantic tradition of landscape painters who create a sense of place as a metaphor for the human spirit.  Attempting to make opposites connect, she seeks out contrasting elements, those inherent in the subject as well as those existing in the creative process.  Although her compositions are carefully planned, media manipulation and brushwork push the reality of her water media works well beyond the merely descriptive.  Betty also teaches watercolor classes at her WaterMedia Academy.  Connect here for more information.
Mary Paladin
Brant Lake, NY 12815
mary@marypaladin.com
www.marypaladin.com
Art has always been an essential part of Mary’s life. At the age of two and a half she began drawing with crayons on anything she could-including her bedroom wall. At four she received her first set of “real” watercolors from a relative in Europe which inspired the animals she painted on the back of her closet door. Mary was not a mischievous child by any means; she just wanted to “make pretty things”. She has studied various forms of art throughout her life; pottery, sculpture, textile design, fiber arts and jewelry making. Painting and drawing however are her favorite forms of expression with painting being her “passion”. Mary works in pen and ink, colored pencil, acrylic, watercolor and gouache; she is the happiest when she can "make pretty things".    Mary is also the author of "The Adirondacks that are the Other Half of Me"...

Oil on Linen by Leslie Parke
"Since my time as an artist-in-residence at the Claude Monet Foundation in Giverny, France, I feel as though I have been on the other end of Monet’s see-saw.  While he pressed his work from strict observation into abstraction with his late lily paintings, I am pushing mine from abstraction back into representation.  In my most recent work, I like to sit on the edge between the two possibilities.  I am happiest when I can make a very abstract composition and yet imbue it with all sorts of qualities that are only possible in a representational context, such as light reflections, transparencies, translucencies, glitter, sparkle and shimmer.  How light affects natural surfaces, such as flowers, insects and water; and artificial surfaces, such as patent leather, foil, Mylar, transparent ribbons, and glass, become part of my visual arsenal. For a while the more elusive and impossible the image was to paint, the more it interested me.  A painting succeeds for me when it seems as though the light is emanating from inside the canvas."

Work by Jim Parker
Jim Parker states, "I've always been creative and dabbled in visual arts.  A life threatening medical diagnosis has taught me that there is only this moment.  Painting whether it be in oil or watercolor keeps me in the moment.  I believe you can see my passion for life in the images. I paint what I know--the Adirondacks, Saratoga, and the ocean."
