Character of Nature

Beethepeace@yahoo.com
www.CharacterOfNature.com
Work by Daniel Ippoliti-DeShaw
Daniele Ippoliti-DeShaw often finds herself becoming one with nature whether she is on a neighborhood walk with her young boys or in the woods for hours by herself.  This has led to her desire to expose the lost wonders of natures little intricacies in a variety of abstractions through photography.  Sometimes this happens with a single shot of something so up close its identity is left questionable, or arranging a single image of nature repeatedly in a final kaleidoscope image, or taking bits and pieces of her nature photographs and using  collage to create unique characters who come with a message.

Sunrise, Hudson River (Calamity Brook)
Since the 1980’s Gretchen has photographed the Hudson River and its people from Lake Tear of the Clouds to the Statue of Liberty. She works in the darkroom to create 11 x 14 archival black-and-white silver gelatin prints. Having won a 2003 LARAC Individual Artists Grant, she created an exhibit called “Harnessing the Hudson” that depicts the Hudson River’s industrial past and present between Corinth and Hudson Falls, pairing historic photographs of 19th century mills and factories with her own 21st century photos of the same sites. Public appreciation for this project has inspired Gretchen to continue chronicling the poignant history of the Hudson River’s old mills. She also continues to shoot portraits, close-ups of native plants, and landscapes.

Mesa Arch at Sunrise
The passion to capture and share images of special events and places takes me to some of this countries most wild, scenic and wilderness areas. To share with others and help bring an awareness and appreciation for this beauty is what drives me.  Many of our State and National Parks, Wilderness Areas and National Monuments are under staffed, under funded and under siege by special interests intent on exploiting their resources for monetary gain. I urge you to become aware of the problems our national treasures and environment face so that future generations may explore and marvel at the natural beauty that we have left for them. As I have rediscovered the desire to explore, photography has allowed me to capture rare moments and document the striking beauty that appears and disappears in seconds.

Photograph by Ray Palmer
Ray Palmer is a photographer specializing in landscapes and wildlife. He works in film format to record both planning and chance in nature exploration. He has extensively photographed the Adirondack High Peaks area and has shot extensive hikes and outdoor excursions in Montana and Wyoming including the Yellowstone/Teton complex; Glacier National Park; the Beartooth-Absorokas; from the White Mountains to Acadia and Maine; the desert and high country of the Four Corners states of the Southwest; into California and the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Costa Rica and Caribbean destinations. Hopefully the images evoke a memory for the observer—perhaps not the same waterfall, sunset or wild encounter—but a window to another experience, a prod to wanderlust, and a reminder that the earth’s treasures need our appreciation.

Poetry Experiences for the Heart, Mind and Spirit
Susan Jefts has a chapbook called Bended Moments and has been published in such journals as Parnassus, ByLine, Big City Lit and by Parabalas Press.  She offers a variety of poetry experiences and workshops in settings which include retreat centers, yoga studios, hospitals, schools, private offices and out in nature.  Some workshops are centered around a theme while others are focused on poetry and writing, but all use poetry as a vehicle for moving more deeply into the present and therefore into greater awareness of oneself and one's life.  In this way, the groups are valuable for writers and non writers alike. Susan says, "We let the words and images speak to us and lead us into a deeper place of knowing and creating."
